Founded in 1898, Scarsdale Golf Club is Westchester's second oldest golf course, with the original nine holes designed by Willie Dunn.
C.A.W. "Carl" Fox, our first golf professional who also served as the greenskeeper, expanded the course to 18 holes in July of 1900.
Many of Scarsdale's most prominent citizens were among SGC's first members including the Burgess, Crane and Brewster families, seen here.
In 1909 SGC's second clubhouse was built on top of the hill and became a full-service club offering bowling, tennis, squash and billiards. Unfortunately, in 1913 a fire destroyed the clubhouse and in 1917 another fire destroyed it's replacement.
The new "fireproof" clubhouse, which still stands today, was opened on August 24, 1922. Since this was during Prohibition, it originally did not contain a bar, but did include bowling alleys, a complete kitchen and multiple dining rooms, a billiard room, men's and women's locker rooms, a smoking room and a 16-foot piazza extending the length of the building.
While the new clubhouse was under construction a renovation of the golf course was underway as well. Noted golf architect A.W. Tillinghast was engaged to redesign the course with a design including seven new holes (the present 11th - 17th), a revision of holes 2 - 4, and combined two old holes to form his 18th. Tillinghast's plans were completed in February of 1922 and opened in May of 1924.
On September 23, 1925, SGC introduced its first Kiltie Day, 36 holes with the members clad in "kilts and caps of Caledonian aspect."
Although today's winter activities are largely encompassed by bowling and paddle tennis, SGC has a storied past of outdoor winter fun that included their very own ice hockey team.
In the early years SGC club life was very active during the winter. The "Scarsdale Snowbirds" braved the elements each week on the course, and families enjoying the ski tow at the 11th hole that allowed for skiing and sledding.
For years the Club held an annual Children's Winter Carnival as well as an Annual Family Sledding Night.
SGC's first pool was opened in 1954.
The Club further expanded in the 1960s & '70s, adding a third tennis court and two new paddle courts.
In our effort to be continually offering our members the finest facilities, we renovated the Men's Locker Rooms and expanded the 18th Terrace in 1999.
In 2012 we opened the doors to our completely renovated North Complex which houses the Golf Shop, Bag Storage, Cart Storage, Caddie Room and Office, Ladies Locker Rooms and Midway Cafe.
SGC member, Brandon Wu, places second among amateurs at the US Open. He famously skipped his Stanford graduation ceremony to play the final round at Pebble Beach and received his diploma on the 18th hole when he had finished playing. Brandon made is pro debut in September 2019.
